＃３で回答した者ですが、「I saw him cross the road」を「I saw him pass the road」に置き換えることはできません。

前者は「the road」に相当する特定な道を渡ることです。一方で後者は「the road」に相当する特定な道を「踏まずに通り過ぎること」なのです。

したがって、その道を渡ることはできないし、その道を通行することもできません。渡る場合にはやはり「cross」を使いますし、通行する場合には「go through」や「walk/drive along」などを使うのが一般的であり、「pass」は使いません。

強いて言うなら、＃３で示しましたように、どこかに「the road」が見えていて、それを踏むことなく、そばを通り過ぎる場合には「pass」が使えます。つまり、「the road」とは違う道を通行するわけです。

意味が異なります。

縦と横の関係です。

「I saw him cross the road」
私は彼がその道路を横切るのを見ました。（横切る）

「I saw him pass the road」
私は彼がその道路を通るのを見ました。（通る）

「I saw him pass the road」でイメージとして浮かぶのは、ある人に道順を教えていて、本当は曲がらなければならない道を通り過ぎてしまったという感じです。

それにしても、その場合なら、I saw him pass the turn. または、I saw him miss the turn. のほうが分かりやすいですね。

「通りを渡る」なら、Cross the road (street)ですね。

Passは、通り過ぎるという意味で、「郵便局を通り過ぎて。。。passing the post office」みたいな感じですから、「通りを渡る」の意味にはなりません。

少なくとも同じ意味には絶対になりません。

そして、そもそも「pass the road」が使える状況が思い浮びません。

強いて言えば、自分が通行中の道（仮にAとする）と、途中まで平行に走っている道（仮にBとする）があり、Aをひたすら通行することで、Bを「やりすごす」ことにはなるかもしれませんね。

なお、＃２さんのご意見には賛成しかねます。

イメージできるように書くと・・・

「cross the road」は、
今いる歩道から、その　the road を横切って反対側の歩道に出る。

「pass the road」は、
今あなたが進んでる道に対して、前方に交差する the road が見えて交差点を構成してる状況で、交差するthe road で曲がらずに、”通り過ぎて”　そのまま真っ直ぐ今進んでる道を行く。

cross だったら横断するけれど、pass だったら通り過ぎるよ
