長文は英語ではあまり好まれないです、文は次のように読むべきです。
The reason is that people (who are being liked by others) can get additional support (beyond what friends and family can offer) when they are in difficult situations.

"are being liked"って、正しい英語ですか？

"when they are in difficult situations"の"they"とは誰のことか、紛らわしいですね。
そもそも二番目の文は全体的に無理があると思いますね。
