the other は「残りのひとり」

anotherは「別のひとり」と覚えると役立ちますよ。

The otherだと、2人のうちの、「もう一人（残りの一人）」

anotherは、「(追加の意味での）もう一人」
例文を書きます。

I have 2 sisters; one lives in Japan and the other lives in Italy.
私には妹が二人います。一人は日本に住んでいて、もう一人はイタリアに住んでいます。

My niece already has 2 sons and she is going to have another in September!
私の姪はすでに2人男の子がいて、もう一人9月に生まれます。
