replaceはその文だと、中身を取り出してなにか違うものを入れるようなイメージなのでちょっと違うかなと感じます。

通じるかどうかは兎も角として、"replace"という動詞はそのようには使えない。

でしょ。replace は置き換えること。

「入れ替える」という日本語から考えるとむずかしいですが、状況を思い浮かべてみると、replaceを使うより、putのような動詞を使った方が自然な気がします。
