で、結局断ったのですか、それとも思っただけ？それによって英語の訳が変わってきますので。

一応両方書いておきます。

1.　実際に断った場合：I turned the offer (the invitation) down because I didn't want to give (you, him, her etc.) trouble.
2.　思っただけで、まだ断っていないという場合：I thought I would turn the offer (the invitation) down because I wouldn't want to give (you, him, her etc.) trouble.

「誘い」についてもその種類によって違うので、OfferとInvitationを使い分けてください。辞書で引くとわかりますよ。
