誰か教えて下さい

少し前の投稿質問中に "It would have been bad enough were Trump a mere crackpot acting on his own pathetic stage" という文を見かけました。

これは "It would have been bad enough if Trump were a mere ...." ということだとその質問についた回答は述べています。ここで疑問があります。If Trump were a ... は過去形なので、仮定法過去の文であれば It would be bad .....　になるはずですが、この点が分かりません。

次の二つの表現はいずれも文法的に認められています:

◎　If I were you, I wouldn't have accepted such boring work.
　　わたしならそんな退屈な仕事は受け入れなかっただろう。(過去の事に関する仮定表現)
◎　If I were you, I wouldn't accept such boring work.
　　わたしならそんな退屈な仕事は受け入れないだろう。(現在の事に関する仮定表現)

解説例:
The second conditional: If I were you, I would leave the party.
The third conditional: If I had been you, I would have left the party.
Yours is quite a well-known and accepted mixture, called the mixed 2nd/3rd conditional - If I were you, I would have left the party.

こちらが本物の原文であるとしますと、元の質問文と少し違うようですよ:

_It would bad enough_ if Trump were a mere crackpot acting out on his own pathetic stage – a would-be dictator who accidentally became president and then arranged an attempted coup, along with an assault on the U.S. Capitol, when he lost the election -- after which he was swept into the dustbin of history.

私がネットで調べたところこの記事は歴史あるGuardian紙電子版に載っています。記事を書いた人は過去、アメリカの労働長官やUC Barkely の教授もしている人です。新聞であれば校正もあるし英語の単純な間違いの見落としではないと思います。この点どう思われますか？
