これは正しい文です。ただし、もっとわかりやすくする工夫ができます。

ここで二つの it が出てきますが、それは the side dish のことですよね。それなら、最初の二つの it が side dish であることが、少なくともこの文だけを見ていると、最後にならないとわかりません。できれば side dish を前に持ってきた方がいいです。だから、僕ならば次のように書きます。

I smelled the side dish to see if it was rotten before eating it.
または
Before eating the side dish, I smelled it to see if it was rotten.

私の記憶は確かでは無いのですが、
the side dish が後のほうにあったような・・・
でもそれではわかりにくいように思い、質問をさせていただきました。
