4／27のご質問ではお返事を有難うございました。

どちらもwhatを使った疑問文にwould you say「言うだろうか」という疑問文が挿入されたものです。

訳し方はwould you sayを省いて、what節だけでまず訳し、後で、would you say「～と言うだろうか」を加えればすっきりした訳になります。

１．what would you say is the greatest invention of the twentieth century?：
（１）挿入されているwould you sayを省いて、疑問文をみると
what is the greatest invention of the twentieth century?
となっています。

（２）このwhatの疑問文は、whatが主語S、isが不完全自動詞V、the greatest invention of the twentieth centuryが補語Cとなり、SVCの第2文型になっています。

（３）訳は「何が二十世紀最大の発明だと、君は答えるだろうか」

（４）肯定文はwould you sayの部分を肯定文の語順、すなわち主語＋動詞の語順にして、what節（ここでは名詞節）をsayの目的語として後置すればいいのです。sayの目的語も名詞節になりますから、名詞節の中の語順は変える必要はありません。例：

アメリカに38年半住んでいる者です。

　私なりに書かせてくださいね。

what would you say is the greatest invention of the twentieth century?はwould you sayと言うフィーリングが挿入された表現であり、what is the great inventionof the twentieth century?が質問であり、

what would you say the greatest invention of the twentieth century is?はWhat would you?が質問なのです。

ですから、自然と、前者への返事は （I would say) xxx is (the great inventionof the twentieth century)であり、後者へは（I would say) It (the great inventionof the twentieth century) is xxx.と言う返事の形になるわけです。

つまり、xxx isとするか、It is xxxにするかが基本となるフィーリング表現なのです。

「肯定文に直す」という意味がよく分かりませんが（whatのような疑問詞の入った分は肯定文にはならない）、２つの分の答えがどんなものかということであれば、以下のようになります。

（下の分では、例としてcomputerが答えということにしています。）
I would say the computer is the greatest invention of the twentieth century.
I would say the greatest invention of the twentieth century is the computer.

どっちの文も、

You would say the greatest invention of the twentieth century is なんちゃら.

になります。

ただ、
ペアになっている invention と is との距離が離れていると、意味・意志が伝わりにくいので、前者の文では、倒置して is を前に持ってきているだけです。

肯定文にするとして、is と なんちゃら とがお隣同士になりますので、
倒置はしないのが自然ですね。


それから、
would you は、do you を敬語にしたものなので、そのまま肯定文に直すと変ですね。
そういう意味では、you say のほうが良いかも。


ところで、
肯定文という言葉は、否定文の対義語だと思うんですが・・・
