重箱読み、と湯桶（ゆとう）読み、をそれぞれ英語で言い表したいのですが、訳にこまっています。

この説明のためには、日本語では漢字の読み方に音読みと訓読みがある、という説明が事前に必要かと思います。

つまり、同じ漢字でも、中国での発音を引き継いでいる音読み(sounds influenced by Chinese pronunciation) と、もともと日本にあったものの名前と結びつけた訓読み(Japanse words having same meaning described by same Chinese charactor) があるという説明が必要です。

そして、通常は、漢字が並んでいる熟語は全部音読みばかりで読んだり、全部訓読みばかりで読むのが普通だと説明します。

ただし、例外がときどきあって、有名な例外として重箱読み（音読み＋訓読み）や、湯桶よみ（訓読み＋音読み）がある、という説明をすることになるかと思います。

私も辞書を引いてみましたが、適当な語句や説明は見あたりませんね。どうしても説明的にならざるを得ませんが、挑戦してみます。

There are two idiomatic ways of reading a phrase of two Chinese characters, which are Jyubako-yomi and Yuto-yomi. Jyubako-yomi is a peculiar way of reading with Chinese pronunciation on the first one and Japanese on the second, while Yuto-yomi is just the opposite with Japanese pronunciation on the first and Chinese on the second.
