fall to one's kneesについて

参考書に When she visited the grave, she fell to her knees at the sight of it.
(その墓を訪れた時、それを見て彼女はがっくりと膝を落とした)

という英文が載ってました。
確かfall on one's kneesで「ひざまずく」という熟語があったと思うんですけど、上のfall to one's kneesも熟語なんですか？

2つの意味の違いもよく分からないのですが…。

両方あるようです。

あまり違いは見られません。

●"fall"の例では
fall on one's head 頭から倒れる
fall on [or to] one's knees ひざまずく
fall back [or on one's back] あおむけに倒れる
fall face down [or on one's face] うつぶせに倒れる

●"on"は「支点」の意ですね。
walk on tiptoe [one's hands] つま先[逆立ち]で歩く
lie on one's back [face] あおむけ[うつぶせ]になる
fall on one's knees ひざまずく
The earth turns on its axis. 地球は自転する.

●"to"は「方向」の意が強いですね。

１）Cambridge Dictionary Online にはイディオムとして entry があります。

fall down on one's knees; come down on one's kneesという言い方が同義として紹介されています。

２）実際、"fell to * knees" で Google を検索しますと多くヒットします。

　例）When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus...

３）意味的には、fall on one's knees ＝ fall to one's knees で、大きな違いはないようです。
