of humans. In every decade, researchers have competed for the last word about the
man’s death: rheumatic fever, Henoch-Schoenlein syndrome, manic depression,
infectious disease aggravated by bad medical treatment, a hematoma caused by a
fall or blow to the head, or even – the persistently popular favorite – murder.

この of humans は「人類にとって」とも「人類の中で」とも取れますが、両方を意味していると考えても差し支えないでしょう。

複数の意味を一語に込めて言うことはあります。少々文学的になっていて、厳密な表現ではないということです。モーツァルトのことですし、「この人類史上の謎」くらいに捉えれば良いと思います。
