isの後のofはどういう意味で使っているのでしょうか？

a memory of sitting next to the pond　の of です。

of の前に、「それ」という意味の that を入れて、下のようにも言えます。

One of my happiest childhood memories is that of sitting next to the pond.

～について(の)・に関する、に関した、の意味の前置詞 of ですから、

One of my happiest childhood memories is of sitting next to the pond.
と書いたり、語ったりした人は、”子供の頃の楽しい思い出の一つは、池の隣
に腰を下していたことに＜関する・ついての＞ものです。と言いたかったの
でしょう。この of が無ければ、”子供の頃の楽しい思い出の一つは、池の隣
に腰を下していたことです”になります。
