in/for/of＋期間の使い分けについて

Local media have reported that it is the deadliest wildfire in the United States in more than a century.
アメリカで起きた山火事の犠牲者としては、この１００年余りで最多だと現地メディアが伝えました。

上記は、NHKラジオ番組「ニュースで現代英語」の一文です。
ここで、「この100年余りで」の意味で、"in more than a century"と前置詞inで表現しています。
私的には、forの方が適切なように思うのですが、使い分けがあるのでしょうか。

つきましては、次の点ご教示願います。
・提示文でforも可能なのか。使い分けがあれば、その違い。（最上級との共起？）
・ofも可能なのか。可能ならば使い分け。

最上級の場合

主にアメリカ英語：in
主にイギリス英語：for


first の場合
in が普通

After negatives and superlatives, 'in' can be used to talk about duration.

This is normal in American English.
・ I haven't seen him for/in months/
・ It was the worst storm for/in ten years.

肯定文ではもちろん for
She has lived in San Francisco for/×in ten years.

ただし、first の場合は in
for the first time in a long time 久しぶり
Our team won the championship for the first time in/×for ten years.
私たちのチームは10年ぶりに優勝した.

最上級は、inやofで構成された前置詞句による限定的範囲の中で一番～のように表現しますが、firstだけでなく一般的に最上級を限定する範囲が、期間の場合でも、forではなくinを使うとの理解で宜しいでしょうか。
