ある英文に関して質問です

It is no surprise, then, that we have changed the way in which we think about the eukaryotic nucleus: not long ago we could only study its structure at a rather gross level, but it is now more of an experimental laboratory.


(1)最初not ～but の構文かと思ったのですが、どうも違うようです。
このnotはどういう働きなのでしょうか？訳からすると not long ago が一つだと思うのですが、働きがどうもわかりません。

(2)moreのところがわかりません。moreの後にlevelが省略だと思うのですが、なぜ訳が「むしろ」となっているのでしょか？

以上２点よろしくお願いします。

訳「～少し前までは、やや大まかな段階でしかその構造について研究することができなかったが、それは現在ではむしろ実験室の段階にある。

(１)not long ago ⇔ now

　　at a rather gross level ⇔ more of an experimental laboratory
　　という対比だと思います。

(２)more of an experimental laboratory level　の省略でしょうね。
　　「実験室段階以上(にある)」と訳しますか。
　　ちょっと前は大雑把にしか分らなかったものが、現在では実験室
　　レベル以上にある(＝それだけ解明されてきている)

(1) はおっしゃるように not long ago がまとまりで、「少し前」。

これは yesterday とか　one year later などと同じように時間に関する修飾語（副詞句）です。

で、but ですが、この not long ago という時期と、now とを対比させています。「少し前は～だったが、しかし今では～だ」。大局的にとらえるしかなかったのと、細密に核をきりきざむ（？）実験レベルとを対比させています。

(2)は、levelを入れてもよいですが、「it is more of ...」で
「これはより...である」あるいは「これはむしろ...である」と覚えるとよいですね。逆は it is less of ... 「これはむしろ...でない」。

私の解釈と追加、、、、、、、、、、、

but it is now more of an experimental laboratory [than](1) [the level we could study its structure at a rather gross level](2).


この様に(1)と(2)が完全省略されていると考えれば、、、「it is now more level」を「~~~~~~(1)(2)→(と云うよりむしろ」今はもう実験室レベルだと言える)と訳せませんでしょうか?


「more」があると云うことは必ずそれ以下(それより劣った)モノとの比較が隠されている(と云うより、わざわざ長たらしく云う必要もないのだという)考え方です。
