フィリピンの人と話していて（一応英語の先生をしている）、、フィリピンには島が7000以上あるといいう話になりました。
　それで

人が住んでいる島は幾つありますか

　という質問をしたかったのですが　良い英語が口から出ません。

その先生が教えてくれたのは、、

How many islands have people inhabiting them?

という英語ですが、何か違和感があります。　



フィリピンには人が住んでいる島はいくつありますか　という正しい英語を教えてください。

私は先生の英語に何の違和感も感じませんが、下記のような表現のほうが親しみやすいでしょうか。

How may of those islands have people living in them?
Do people live in all of those islands?（答えがSome.ならHow many?と聞ける）
Are there islands with no residents?（同上）

上記の様に出ていますから、ご質問の文脈では以下の様に質問すればよいのではないかと思います。

inhabited の代わりに populated も可能かと思いますが、populated は「人口の多い」というニュアンスがあるように思います。
