whateverの用法について

複合関係代名詞のwhateverについての質問です
Take whatever action is necesary to save the earth
という英文を見ました

後半の
action is necesary to save the earth
という文はSVCで完結しているような気がするのですが、そこにどうして関係代名詞がくっついているのでしょうか？

参考書を見ると、whatever=anything thatとなっているのですが、
ばらして考えると益々分かりません

自分の文法的な見落としはなんですか？

結論としては #1 の段階で

＞普通に what という疑問詞が、what subject という形容詞的に用いられるように、whatever も
と書いているように，形容詞的に whatever action とつなげたら終わりです。

whatever であれば that があってはいけませんが，any や all に変えると
Take any action THAT is necessary to save the earth.
Take all (the) action(s) THAT is/are necessary to save the earth

that がないと文法的には正しくありません。

上記ロイターのタイトルをみれば分かるように
"whatever action is necessary”を一区切りの文章としているならばwhateverは添付辞書の1番の(関係)代名詞ではなく2番の形容詞の扱いとすれば理解できるはず。形容詞の2番でall ofと言う意味

ならば
Take "all of the action is necessary to save the earth."


と考えれば一番分かりやすい構文になりますよ。

参考書をかばうわけではないですが，

たぶん，質問者は
Take whatever action is necesary to save the earth.
という英文をどこかで見つけた。

よくわからないから，参考書で whatever を調べたら，
whatever ＝ anything that となっていた
ということでしょう。

参考書自体にこの英文が載っていて，その説明として whatever ＝ anything that
なんて，参考書に書いているはずがないので。
間違ったことを書く参考書はいくらでもありますが，これは間違いにくいことです。

複合関係代名詞として whatever ＝ anything that だけど，
形容詞的に用いるとそうではない。
（日本ではこういうのを形容詞とするわけですが，英語圏では determiner「限定詞」）
どこの参考書にも，とりあえず，whatever ＝ anything that と説明します。

Take whatever you like.「好きなものは何でもとりなさい」
こういうのだと whatever ＝ anything that です。
＞ばらして考えると益々分かりません
というのが，
Take whatever you like.
＝ Take anything that you like.
でもそうでしょうか。

#1 でも申し上げたように，
whatever action なら any action that です。
#1 で what subject と同じように形容詞的と申し上げました。

申し上げたように，分解せず，whatever のまま，whatever action のまま理解するに越したことはありません。
先行詞を含まない which, who- と違って
先行詞を含む what は疑問詞と構造は変わりません。
whatever は -ever の分，「～でも」が加わりますが，やはり疑問詞的に理解できます。
ただ，訳すと，「必要などんな行動も」「必要な行動はどんなものでも」
というふうに，後ろからかけて訳す感覚になってしまう。

だから，日本人としては whatever ＝ anything that や what ＝ thing which とか，分解しないと理解しにくい。

　残念ながら、この英文に関して「whatever = anything that」としている時点で信頼できない参考書であることが分かってしまいます。

　この「whatever」は関係形容詞だと考えて「whatever action = any action that」と考えることができるかどうかが英語の上級者への分かれ道だと考えられます。

　お互いに英語の学習に関心を抱く者として精進できると良いですね。ご参考になれば・・・。

whatever action (that) is necessary ～

ここで that を入れてはだめです。

any action that is necessary ～
any にすれば、関係代名詞 that が必要で、主格だから省略できない。

whatever 自体、関係詞的役割が含まれますので、
that があってはおかしいのです。

action という名詞がついても、whatever だけでも同じ。

whatever is
whatever action is

目的格的な場合に
whatever action (that) you take
なんかもついやりたくなりますが、こういう that はあってはいけないもの。

「地球を救うために必要なことは何でも」

whatever ＝ anything that で、
whatever is necessary to save the earth
＝ anything that is necessary to save the earth
と書くべきでした。

whatever がなぜ複合関係詞と言われるかというと、
whatever is necessary ～とまず is の主語として使う。

さらに、whatever (is necessary to save the earth) 全体で take の目的語
というふうに、２度使う。

そのうち、最初の方を anything that という関係代名詞 that に置き換えることで、
すりかえています。

whatever action であれば、このかたまりで、
is の主語となるとともに、
whatever action (is necessary to save the earth) で take の目的語
と２度使います。

関係代名詞の what 自体、thing which と置き換えるのが鉄則で、
正直、私もその感覚についなってしまうのですが、what のまま理解できればいいと思います。

whateverには形容詞としての使い方があります

1. Of any number or kind; any: Whatever requests you make will be granted.
2. All of; the whole of: She applied whatever strength she had left to the task.
3. Of any kind at all: No campers whatever may use the lake before noon.

Take whatever action (that) is necesary to save the earth.

Take whatever action is necesary to save the earth

普通に what という疑問詞が、what subject という形容詞的に用いられるように、
whatever も名詞とともに用いられます。

whatever is necessary to save the earth であれば、
whatever ＝ anything that is necessary to save the earth
「地球を救うために必要なことは何でも」

whatever action でかたまりになって、
「地球を救うために必要などんな行動も」とりなさい。

whatever ならそれだけで is の主語。
whatever action で is の主語。

書き換えると、whatever action ＝ any action that とでもなります。
