whateverの用法について

複合関係代名詞のwhateverについての質問です
Take whatever action is necesary to save the earth
という英文を見ました

後半の
action is necesary to save the earth
という文はSVCで完結しているような気がするのですが、そこにどうして関係代名詞がくっついているのでしょうか？

参考書を見ると、whatever=anything thatとなっているのですが、
ばらして考えると益々分かりません

自分の文法的な見落としはなんですか？

　今回の「whatever」は関係形容詞と考えると良いでしょう。

　「関係代名詞」でも「関係形容詞」でも、もとの２つの英文を考えると理解の助けになります。

(1) Take any action.
(2) It is necessary to save the earth.

　「関係代名詞」を用いて一つにしましょう。

(3) Take ANY action THAT is necessary to save the earth.

　「that is necessary to save the earth」の先行詞は「any action」です。この英文だと普通の関係代名詞の用法ですので理解は簡単だと思います。

＞参考書を見ると、whatever=anything thatとなっているのですが、ばらして考えると益々分かりません

　よく分からないのもごもっともです。その説明は「whatever」が「関係代名詞」の場合のものです。

　上記の（３）の英文の「any ... that ～」を一語で書き換えると「関係形容詞」の「whatever」になります。「関係代名詞」の「wahtever」と関係形容詞の「whatever」の違いは、後者には必ず「名詞」が後続するということです。

(4) Take WHATEVER action is necessary to save the earth.

　もし（４）の英文から「action」をとってしまったら何を「take」するのか分からなくなってしまいます。

　「Take whatever action ...」で「・・・である行動は何でも取りなさい。」という意味になります。これを理解しておけば、いくらでも複雑な英文に応用できるようになります。

(5) Take whatever action you like.

(6) Take whatever action you think necessary.

(7) Take whatever action you think is necessary.

　（６）や（７）の英文は上級者でも理解しにくいものですが、「Take whatever action ... = Take any action that ...」と考えると理解しやすくなります。

　調子に乗って少々脱線してしまったようです。話をもとに戻しましょう。

　（４）の英文の中の「is necessary (to save the earth)」の先行詞は「whatever action」全体になります。

　「地球を救うために必要な行動は何でも取りなさい。」という日本語を表すためには（３）の英文でも（４）の英文でも構いません。

関係形容詞としてとらえるのは分かりやすいですねー
「関係形容詞」という概念が教科書にも参考書にも載っていなくてWhatのときにも結構悩んだので…

正しいならば

おかしくなるから、結局＝が成り立たない、と言いたいのでしょうか。
どうも日本語がよくわからない。

ここがわかるかどうかが上級者の分かれ目だったかおっしゃっている方がいました。
まあ、そんな大袈裟なことでなく、一方、わからなくても英語ができる人もいるでしょう。

普通には whateve ＝ anything that とある。
形容詞的に whatever 名詞となった場合までは考慮しない、
というか自然に判断できるというか。

その自然な判断とは
単に whatever なら any-THING that である。
それが whatever action となると、any ACTION that となる。

anything という単語は any thing とは別というのもあります。

普通に意味がわかれば
whatever action is necessary
＝ any action that is necessary
です。

今回は whatever 自体の質問なので、わからなくたっていいですし、
わからいんなら無理にでも覚えることです。

whatever action is necessary
＝ any action that is necessary
は正しくないというのなら、
(that) any action is necessary なら正しいというのでしょうか？
それで whatever ＝ anything that を当てはめて説明できるのでしょうか？

(2) ＝ Take any action that is necessary to save the earth.

上記文は正しい。ならば
↓
＝　Take any action that is necessary to save your life.
＝　Take any vegitable that is necessary to save your life.
＝ Take any food that is necessary to save your life.
＝　Take any thing that is necessary to save your life.

とactionをvegitableやfoodに置き換えて良い。当然、thingとも書き換えられる。

ならば
=　Take any action that is necessary to save the earth.
のactionをthingに書き換えれば
↓
Take any thing that is necessary to save the eath.
↓
any thing that　= whateverなので

＞(1) Take whatever is necessary to save the earth.（代名詞的用法の場合）
＝ Take anything that is necessary to save the earth.

と一番の文法解釈になる。

Take whatever is necessary to save the earth.

は
any action that = any food that = ＝ any vegitable = any thing that

がwhateverに置き換わっているということがわかるはずです。故に、

Take whatever action is necessary to save the earth.
→　Take any action that action is necessary to save the earth.
Take　whatever food is neccesary to save your life.
→ Take any food that food is neccesary to save your life.
Take whatever thing that the thing is neccesary to save the eath.
Take any thing that the thing is necessary to save the earth.

（英々文法書をみてwhatever = any thing thatならば、そこを入れ替える作業をするだけでそれ以上はしてはいけない。）

故に下記の解釈が間違いとなる。
>(2) Take whatever action is necessary to save the earth.（形容詞的用法の場合）
＝ Take any action that is necessary to save the earth.

まず、whatever action これでかたまり、出発点はここです。

この、形＋名詞を take の目的語とする。

意味は「どんな行動でも」で、any action と似ていますが、もちろん違いがあります。
any なら Take any action. これで終わっていいです。

Take whatever action は、その「どんな行動」の「行動」を説明することができる、
というか、必ずしないとだめです。
たとえば「（その行動が）必要である」というのであれば
whatever action IS NECESSARY とつなげる。

「（その行動を）あなたが好む」なら whatever action YOU LIKE とつなげる。
ここで、目的格の (that/which) の省略があるのでは決してない。

こういうふうに、つなげられるのは whatever が単なる形容詞ではなく、
複合関係形容詞だからです。
any や all なら関係代名詞が必要。目的格なら省略可。

any action that is necessary
any action (that) you like

こういうふうに、whatever は文をつないでいく、接続詞であるというのがコウビルド英英辞典の扱いですが、普通には限定詞とか、形容詞としています。

ばらし方の問題ですね。次のように解体すればわかると思います。

(1) Take whatever is necessary to save the earth.（代名詞的用法の場合）
＝ Take anything that is necessary to save the earth.
(2) Take whatever action is necessary to save the earth.（形容詞的用法の場合）
＝ Take any action that is necessary to save the earth.
受験英語としてはこの２種類を公式として覚えておけば十分だと思います。

もちろん、take の意味によっては that 節はきます。

たとえば「～と思う」の意味なら。

(that) any action is necessary なら「どんな行動でも必要である、ということ」
これは「とる」ことなんかできない。

whatever action is necessary「どんな必要な行動も」
（ここで、action が is necessary によって修飾されると考えると、
逆にここに that を置きたくなります。でもあってはいけません）
any action that is necessary「必要などんな行動も」
勝手に訳し分けましたが、同じようなものです。

これなら「とる」ことができる。

瞬間に結論を出すと、この take は「～をとる」だから、目的語は普通の「もの」や事柄。

that 節のような「S は V するということ」のような節はこない。

じゃあ、なぜ whatever ならよいか。
whatever action is necessary（ややこしいのでここで切ります）
は SV を含む節、全体で目的語となります。
そういう意味で名詞節なのですが、あくまでも「なんでも」という「もの」としてまとまる。

something is good「ものがよい」と something that is good「よいもの」
は違います。
関係代名詞 that が必要。
ところが、what を使うと
what is good でよい。
whatever is good もよい。

これを「よいもの」「よいものは何でも」と訳すから、
後ろからかかる感覚になる。

ここに what/whatever の難しさがあります。
だから、whatever は「～するものは何でも」より「何でも～するもの」としたらわかりやすい。
でも、anything や any ～, all ～なんかにすると
any action that is necessary として「必要などんな行動も」と関係代名詞を使って後ろからかけるしかない。
（もちろん、目的格なら省略できます）

take の後は単純な「ものごと」で that 節はこない。
what/whatever なら whatever is good のような英語が使えるが、
他の語なら any action that is necessary とする。

無駄な議論と思いましたが、whatever は「何でも～するもの」とすると英語感覚に近づく
ということを発見しました。
what は何とかなりませんかね？
「～するもの」としない訳し方。

いやあ，反省しますね。

生徒にも関係代名詞 what で名詞節作る，
whatever で名詞節になるときと副詞節になる時がある，とか
難しいこと教えて，こんな風に whatever の名詞節をとらえる人がいる。

生徒の中にも私の説明がちんぷんかんぷんで行き詰っている人も多いのでしょうね。
どうしたら，that 節による名詞節との違いを理解してもらえるでしょうか。

高校生相手になら１対１で紙に書けばなんとかなるかな。
どなたか説明してあげてもらえますか？
私も少しは努力してみようか。それともスルーですか？

take action 動詞＋名詞　
take some action 動詞＋名詞句
take whatever action is necesary to save the earth. 動詞＋名詞節
take (that) all of the action is necessary to save the earth.　動詞＋名詞節

構文解釈です。
