Experts and industry leaders voiced mixed views about raising the consumption tax at a government panel meeting held on Tuesday.

Economic Revitalization Minister Akira Amari and private sector members of the advisory panel on economic and fiscal affairs heard opinions from 9 people.

Some of the participants said the tax increase should be implemented as planned, while extending support measures to smaller businesses.

But others said priority should be on bringing Japan out of deflation, and the tax hike should be postponed.

Tuesday's meeting was the last of 5 meetings this month to hear opinions about the proposed consumption tax hike to 10 percent next October.

Amari will brief Prime Minister Shinzo Abe about the views expressed in the meetings.
