revisionist accounts of the killings have become a staple of Japanese nationalismの部分ですが、accounts of the killingはつまり歴史修正主義者の主張（説明）は日本のnationalismの中心的要素となっている。との理解でよろしいでしょうか？

the death toll was military in nature → 『その死亡者数は性質として軍事的なものであった』　言い換えれば、死んだ人は兵隊同士の戦闘のような軍事行動によるものであって、虐殺行為によるものではないということです。

revisionist accounts of the killings have become a staple of Japanese nationalism
→ 「歴史修正主義者の主張（説明）は日本のnationalismの中心的要素となっている」よりは英文が ... a staple of ...　となっているので、日本語のほうも「・・・日本のnationalismの一つの中心的要素と・・・」としたほう正確です。このような時のaやtheの役割は大切です。
