This is a famous poem of which I do not understand the meaning.
（これは、私はその意味を理解できないのだが、有名な詩だ。）
この文法のなかに、whichの前にofが入るのはどうしてですか？

この二文を関係代名詞で繋いだ場合、語尾の代名詞 it (=poem) は which へと変化し、
それに伴い of が直前に引っ付いた形です。

これについては、in which とか with whom のような、

前置詞＋関係代名詞のようにはなっていますが、
普通、そういう前置詞は動詞と関連して動詞句となるような場合です。

This is the house in which he lives.
He lives in the house. と live in で関連し、
そのための in が必要。

ただし、今回の of which はものを先行詞とする場合の
所有格 whose の代わりの of which でしょう。

ものが先行詞でも whose が使えるのですが、
ものだから、というので of which があります。
人では 's を使い、ものでは of ～で「～の」を表す、
その of です。

つまり、the meaning of the poem「その詩の意味」
で出てくる of です。

でも、こんな英語いまどき習いません。

... poem (that) I don't understand the meaning of
と of を後ろにします。

whose の代わりの of which は
of which the roof
the roof of which
と２パターンあって、
私の学生時代は同じように両方習いましたが、
of which the roof はまれ、と今の辞書にはあります。

また、今回ちょっと特別なのは
of which the meaning
the meaning of which
という所有格＋名詞の部分が動詞の目的語になっている点です。

主語なら
the roof of which is red
みたいにそのままかたまりになるのですが、
目的語なら
(that) I ... understand the meaning of
とすると、of which のもつ堅苦しさがなくなる、
非常に滑らかな英語になります。

この書き方は昔は出てきませんでした。

of which the roof がまれなように、
of which ... the meaning
とするのもまれでしょう。

というか、いまどき of which 自体、習いません。
