pastやtoを使って時間を表現するとき、am、pmは使わない？

英会話のオンラインレッスンで、

What time will you leave the classroom today?
という質問がテキストにあり、

I'll leave the classroom at five to ten pm today.
と回答したら、

先生に、「pastやtoを使うときは、amやpmは使わないのよ」と英語で言われました。

at nine fifty five pmはOKだけど、
at five to ten pmはNGということでしょうか？

ということは、午後…という意味を加えたいときは、in the eveningをつけるしかないと言うことでしょうか？

先生の言われたこと、わかりますね。

何時何分前(to）とか何時何分過ぎ(past)を使う時には、午前か午後かはすでに了解済みのケースが多いということだと思いますよ。

例えば、

今何時？3時5分前　What time is it now? 5 minutes to 3. (この場合、午後3時5分前とは普通答えないでしょう）
次のバスは何時にくるの？8時15分　What time does the next bus come? 15 minutes past 8. (これも、午前8時15分過ぎとは言いませんね）

＞午後…という意味を加えたいときは、in the eveningをつけるしかないと言うことでしょうか？
いいえ、午後3時5分を、３：０５pm（three O fiveと発音します）、午前8時15分を８：１５am（eight fifteen am) と言えばいいのです。

なるほど、午前か午後かはすでに了解済みのケースが多いと言うことなんですね。
確かにテキストに載っていた例文も、午後か午前かは聞き手と話し手のあいだでわかっていますもんね。
amやpmをつけるときは、標準的な言い方をしようと思います。

追記：

15 minutes past 8.　は、a quarter (4分の１）past 8　とも言います。

toやpastの練習のためにあえてこうした言い方をしておりました。
pastやtoを使うときでも、amやpmを使うことはあるのですね。
