という文がありました。　spent 〜　sittingで、座って過ごしたとなりますが、なぜその後のtakeはing形になるのでしょうか？

The reporter spent all day sitting in the courtroom (and) taking down what everyone said in his notebook.

spent ~ sitting
spent ~ taking down
と同格の扱いになっています。
