「取り合う」は以下の競技かるたの説明で使われている
"race" を使ってみてはどうでしょうか。
しっくりきませんか。

普通の百人一首、それとも競技かるたでしょうか。

質問の部分だけであれば、以下のような訳です。

競技カルタなので、取り合う＝奪い合うと言っていいのではないでしょうか。
取り合う(奪い合う)：fight over

A reciter reading a card, two players(competitors) fight over it each other.
吟じ手(朗読者)が1枚のカードを読み上げ、それを2人の取り手(競技者)が奪い合う。
