ミニバスが停車したのは、にぎやかな商店街にある殺風景なオフィスビルだった。初日、玄関からこぼれんばかりに子供たちが出迎えてくれなければ、ここが750人の生徒が通う学校だとは思いもよらなかっただろう。

(be) home to~：～がある、～が存在する、～の所在地である。

it was home to a schoolですから、「それは学校の所在地だった」ーとなります。

質問外ですが、文章の2文目は仮定法過去完了で後半を否定の倒置形にすることでifが省略されています。750 studentsの後ろからです。
had children not spilled out the doorway to greet us on our first day
→if children had not spilled out~first day

もしも初日に子どもたちがそのビルの出入口にあふれ出してこなければ、…学校の所在地だったとは思いも(推測も)しなかったであろう。

[home to ~] は「～の本拠」です。

[home to a school] で「（ある）学校の本拠」。

我々が乗ったミニバス (minibus) は、混雑した (busy) 商店街にある、ありふれた (drab) オフィスビルまで来て止まった。
そこがある学校の本拠で、750人の生徒を抱えている (serving、教えている) など、我々の初日（勤務）であることを歓迎するため (to greet us) 出入口 (doorway) から子供達があふれ出て来なかったら、想像もしなかっただろう。

had children not spilled out は倒置と言って、if children had not spilled out を変えています。仮定法です。

「home to school」ではなく「home to a school」ですね。

直訳すると「とある学校にとっての居場所」です。
詳しくは皆さんがお書きになっているとおりです。
