Iraq reopens national museum

Iraq's national museum has reopened after its closure in the aftermath of the US-led invasion in 2013.

The museum reopened in the capital Baghdad on Sunday.

About 15,000 treasures were stolen in the riots that broke out after the invasion.
Some of these were sold abroad.

But the Iraqi government, with international assistance, has retrieved about 4,300 of the looted items.

At a reopening ceremony, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi referred to video footage of Islamic State militants purportedly destroying Iraqi cultural treasures, and vowed to punish those responsible.

He also said he will work with other countries to recover the remaining stolen artifacts.

A senior Iraqi official told a French media outlet that the militant group's actions spurred Iraq into reopening the museum earlier than planned.

thoseには下記のような意味があります。

1．Cobuild English Usageより
You use those to refer to people or things that you can see or hear, but that are not very near to you.

2.Longman advanced dictionaryより
plural those: used to talk about the person that is further from you in time, distance, etc than someone.

本文では日本から距離的に遠いイラクの人々に関する内容ですし、thoseの後ろにrelated to the governmentとありますので、政府に関係した人々＝政府関係者とか、政府関連の者達などの意味だと考えます。
