were hard to gain. 正しくは、
It was also a land suffering from drought and hunger, and a place where hope and opportunity were
hard to gain. でしょう。この文は、
It was also a land suffering from drought and hunger, <and> [it was (also)] a place where hope and
opportunity were hard to gain. と解釈できます。
　"それはまた、干ばつと飢餓に苦しめられ土地であり、（また、それは）希望や好機を手にすることが困難な場所
であった。”
　他の二つは名詞と名詞結び付けていて、それに対し、二番目の and は、省略されてはいますが、節と節を結び付
　けているということが出来ます。
