英作文の添削。

水産大学校の入試問題です。
問、次の文章を英訳しなさい。
「その国では英語よりフランス語のほうがより多くの人々に話されている。」

Many people in the country speak French than English.

この英文の添削をお願いします。
また、他の解答例があればそれも教えてください。

は、
More people in the country speak French than English.

のほうがと一瞬思うのですが、元の日本語がちょっと微妙な意味ですね。
上の英文だと、比較の対象がずれてしまうので、おかしいかな。

つまり、元の日本文が二つの意味に取れるのです。

１．その国の多数派が英語よりもフランス語を話す。
　
２．その国の人々が、全体として、英語よりもフランス語を話す。

それを踏まえて、
１の意味なら：
French is spoken by more people in that country than English is.

２の意味なら：
Many people in that country speak French more than English.

○　比較級と「than」をできるだけ近づけてみましょう。「number」や「larger」を用いることもできます。

　(1) There are more people speaking French than those speaking English in that country.

　(2) In that country French is spoken by larger number of people than English.

　(3) In that country the number of people who speak French is larger than the number of people who speak English.

　※　下に行くほどより形式ばった感じがします。
