この記事について、Responseを書いているのですが、この記事の最後の方のココの意味がよく理解出来ません。
結局、例外(But there are exception)とは何なんでしょうか。
すみません。　教えていただけると嬉しいです


Of course, gender is never completely out of the picture with teenagers. Back at the west Baltimore boxing gym, 19-year-old Tarahn Robinson says sometimes he uses "yo" for girls. But there are exceptions.

"I change it up for a girl ... I say, 'Shorty took my stuff, yo that girl took my stuff.' " Robinson says. "Shorty. You know, you gotta switch it up, sure."

And as for whether you can expect the pronoun "yo" in a city near you — Mallinson says a bunch of Baltimore kids can't make it go viral. But if a celebrity started using it, though, that might do the trick.

リンク先の記事ざっと読んでみましたが、ご質問のことはこういうことです。

まず貴方が書き出された文章までに、Baltimoreの若者の間でshe、heのような性別により使い分ける代名詞の代わりに、性別に関係なくyoという代名詞が使われていることが説明されています。そして貴方の書き出された文章になります。

（性別に関係なくyoという代名詞が使われるとはいうものの）若者にとって性別はまったく関係なくなったということでは決してない。ボクシングジムの19才のTarahnは自分も女の子に対してyoを使うと言っている。ただ例外はある。「女の子に対しては使い方を変えるんだ。例えばShorty (女の子の名前)が俺のものを持っていった、yo, that girl took my stuff・・・・」

これでお分かりと思いますが、yoを男女別なく使うとはいうものの例外はあり彼が挙げた例ではyo と言った後にthat girlをくっつけています。これがexceptionということです。teenagerであればやはり異性を意識してそうなるのだろうと思います。
