The Arctic is the region around the North Pole.
The one around the South Pole is called the Antartic.
Many people believe that these two regions are similar. After all, they are both icy, cold places.
In reality, however they are quite different.
Polar bears live in the Arctic. People such as the Inuit have homes there, too. In contrast, penguins live in the Antartic But there are no land animals there. As for humans, only people who are engaged in Antartic research stay there long.

北極とは北極点の周りの地域のことだ。

南極点の周りの地域は南極と呼ばれる。
多くの人がこの二つの地域は似ていると考えている。つまり、これらは二つとも氷で覆われており、寒い場所だからだ。
しかしながら実際のところ、北極と南極はまったく違う。
ホッキョクグマは北極に生息する。イヌイットのような人々もそこを住み家としている。対照的に、ペンギンは南極に生息するが、陸生動物（陸地を住みかとする動物）はいない。人間はどうかというと、南極観測に従事する者達だけが長くそこにとどまっている。
