case は大きく分けて「容器」の意味と「場合」の意味になり、

大きく分けると１、２いずれも「場合」です。

しかし、1 は S be the case で「～が実情だ、事実だ、当てはまる」という決まった表現です。
2 は a case で普通の「場合」で、関係副詞 where 以下が修飾しています。
