At the top of a steep cliff, we looked down into the long, green Doone valley. At either end was a narrow gap in the mountain walls. At the further end was the waterfall which I had climbed seven years before, and at the other was what we called the Doone-gate.

上記の文章の理解ができません。とくに、
either endとthe other はイコールと考えて良いのでしょうか？？

２つの端について、どちらの端にも。

a narrow gap ... というのは両端に共通していて、
その両端のうち、
片方についてが at the further end
（単に、片方というのなら at one end ですが、
筆者から見て、より遠い方の end が the further end です）、
残りの一方が the other end です。

ポイントは either end はどちかかと等しいのでなく、
どちらも、両端という意味です。

特に、end や side の場合、each side/end は
both sides/ends と同じと言っていいです。
