【the number of + 無冠詞複数】 【the + 形容詞】

「失業者の数」は、
the number of unemployed people
といいます。
「失業者」は、
unemployed people = the unemployed
なので、
the number of unemployed people = the number of the unemployed
になりそうなのですが、実際は
the number of unemployed
になるということです。
これはどうしてなのでしょうか。

どちらも使われます。下のほうは unemployed people の peopleが略されていると思えばいいです。

がだめというのは何かの本に書いてあったのでしょうか。
私はOKだと思いますが・・・。

だめとは書いてなかったのですが、「the number of the unemployedとしそうなものだが、実際はthe number of unemployedという。それほどthe number ofの後に無冠詞を要求する力は強いということなのか。それとも別の理由があるのだろうか。」と書いてありました。
出典は、ここで詳しく書いても問題がないのかわかりませんので、簡単に言いますと、ある予備校講師の書いた大学受験用参考書です。

the number of the dead「死亡者数」のような表現は
普通に使いますね。
著者が言いたいのは the number of のうしろに普通名詞の複数形が来るときには
theをつけないということではないでしょうか。

the number of buses「バスの数」
the number of the bus「そのバスのナンバー」

という使い分けはあります。
お尋ねの表現は、the + 複数名詞　ではなく、
the + 形容詞＝複数名詞と同じ意味
ということですからまた別の話だと思います。

「･･･の数」というときは、必ず「the number of + 無冠詞複数」となると書いてありました。これは、the number of buses「バスの数」the number of the bus「そのバスのナンバー」ということを言っているのだと思います。
受験生は「失業者の数」を、the number of unemployed peopleとすることに決めておけば問題はないと書いてもありました。
