特にわからないのは、

→構文については忘れてしまいましたが、おそらくfind O　かと。

・fairly forced upon them.の部分はどういう意味か？

→fairly　＝強調の意味で使われています。　「まさしく」とかの意味で考えれば良いかと。

forced upon （force upon ）～　＝～に●●を強いる

つまり、fairly forced upon themで彼らに●●を強いる、という意味になります。

●●に当たるのが、a　tentative answer in the negative　＝否定的な答え, です。

S + V + O ではないかと思います（this question 以下が find の目的語に相当）。

fairly forced upon them は question を修飾。
だから、... find this question forced upon them で、直訳すれば 「彼らに強要されるところの質問を見出す」 ということになります。もっと柔らかくすれば、「答えを迫る質問」などとなるでしょうか。
