英語について質問です。 whose task it is to sort the pieces

Whose task it is to sort the pieces.

という文が大学の過去問に出てきました。

なぜwhose task と it で名詞が連続してしまっているので、ちょっと違和感があったのですが、
このケースでは、なぜ名詞が連続してもよいのでしょうか？

一番元になる文の形は次です

①　It is my task to sort the pieces.

上の文でmy の箇所が誰であるのか、聞くのであれば my task を whose task に置き換えますが、疑問詞なのでそこが文頭にきます。
②　Whose task it is to sort the pieces.

ただし文②単独の疑問文であれば正しい語順は次のようになります。
③　Whose task is it to sort the pieces?（部品を仕分けするのは誰の仕事ですか？）

ご質問の文すなわち②の文の語順になるのは③の文が次のように目的語になるときです。
④　I don't know whose task it is to sort the pieces. （部品を仕分けするのは誰の仕事なのか私は知りません。）

task it ってどういう意味ですか？

これが疑問形なら、おかしいですね。

Whose task is it to sort the pieces？ であるべきです。

全然違うだろ？

Some of the tenants combine unlike items into a single bag, so even this small effort on my part doesn’t clear up the mess. I feel sorry for the garbage collectors, the people whose task it is to sort the pieces one by one.

テナントの中には、違うものをまとめて1つの袋に入れる人もいるので、こんな小さな努力では片付きません。1つ1つ仕分けしているゴミ収集の人たちがかわいそうです。
