先行詞のとり間違え?

Some microbes live in places which we do not think can support life, and they usually get their energy in ways that we could never imagine are possible.

上の文ですが、

文法解析すると、

which（=places）( we do not think) can support life
場所が生命を支えるのを可能にする

that（=ways） (we could never imagine) are possible
方法は可能である

それぞれ先行詞を関係詞に代入すると上のようになりますが、
おかしな訳になります。

先行詞をとり間違えているのでしょうか?

合ってますよ。

そういう主語に慣れていないだけ。

　上記の【】内が挿入的に入っています（辞書によっては、こういう使い方を「挿入的」と解説していたりします）。

　まあ、私のような非ネイティブ英語初級者は、「それって間違ってないか？」と言われやすいので、自分で言ったり書いたりは、あまりしません。
