英訳を教えてください。

「京都は、日本で最も歴史のある都市のひとつです。」　←　historical を使わない。　関係代名詞を使うことが条件

なのですが、宜しくお願いいたします。in Japan の置き場に困っているのです。

１）Kyoto is one of the cities that... これが基本構文です。

２）関係代名詞 that は、cities に掛かりますので、複数扱いとなります。

　Kyoto is one of the cities that have ...

３）「最も歴史のある」→「最も長い歴史を持つ」have the longest history（単数形）

　Kyoto is one of the cities that have the longest history.

４）in Japan の置き場所は、おっしゃるように、文頭に置いても文尾に置いてもcities の後に置いても締まりませんので、あきらめて、Japanese cities とするのがいいでしょう。

　Kyoto is one of the Japanese cities that have the longest history.（たぶんこれが正解とされているのではないかとと推測します。）

５）本当は、Kyoto is one of the oldest cities in Japan. が最も自然なのですが、関係代名詞を使えという制限があるために、どことなくぎこちない英語にならざるを得ません。

６）こだわるなら

　Kyoto is one of those oldest cities in Japan that are saturated in history.

　とか、いろいろ抜け道があるでしょう。

「歴史のある～」なんてのは、すぐ直訳を「歴史～」なんでhistoryに関係する単語・・・と　やってしまいがちになります。

the oldest cities やら　have the longest histories in Japan など、ちょっと日本語の見方（日本語です、日本語！！　私のネックは　そこかもしれません！）の方向をかえる必要が　あると実感します。
