other than 節 の構文について

以下の文のother than 節　はどのように考えればいいのでしょうか？

（歴史と歴史家に関する文章中の一文です）
We cannot have the events other than they are.

（ジーニアス英和辞書の文例です）
The result was quite other than we had expected.



一文目だと形容詞節をまとめると同時に節の中のtheyを受けているような気がします
asで似たような構文を見たことがあります

二文目だと形容詞節をまとめると同時に
節の中で名詞として働きexpectedの目的語になっているような気がします
関係詞の働きに似ているような気がします

そうすると、どうやら1文目と2文目の用法は根本的に違うのかなと思ったのですが
解説書には同じ構文であると書いてありました
しかし、どういう意味かは書いてありませんでした


どう考えれば良いのでしょうか？

"other than"を初めて見た頃は"except"という用法でした。

この用法の場合は直後に名詞（形）が来ることが普通でした。そうして類似表現に"different than"でした。そしてこの用法は結構長く使われていると思うのですが、関係代名詞としての"than"です。本来は主格・目的格の"which"などの先行詞に"more"つまり、比較級がくっついたりすると、"than"が関係代名詞として用いられるということです。しかしここはその関係代名詞ではないようです。

→これは、OALDオンライン辞書にある"in a different way from"の定義ですね。
→We cannot have the events in a different way they are.
「我々は本来のやり方でそれらの行事をやることはできません。」

→この"way"の使い方は
"That's the way things are."「世の中っていうのはそんなものだよ。」という定句と同じ用法です。

→これも上と同じですが、"we had expected"は挿入句としてカッコにくくって省略するものを補えばよく分かります。
"The result was quite in a different way we had expected."
または

「結果は我々が予想していたものとは異なっていた。」という意味ですが、省略された"it would be"が
"That's the way things are."の"things are"という「主語＋be動詞」の形に当たる部分です。

この例は
The test result was better than I had expected.
と同類と考えられます（意味は違います）。

otherは比較級の形ですね。

また、The result was quite different than we had expected.
と言い直すことも可能と思います。
(↓のランダムハウスの例のようなwhatがなくても可という意味）

なお、→ジーニアス英和大辞典にはこの例について
The result was quite different from what we had expected.
とする方が普通ーーと書かれています。
おそらくother thanは古い用法ということでしょう。

また、ランダムハウス英和辞典には
The result was quite other than what I expected.
という例文があります。これはこれで「古い用法」とは違う言い方になっています。

以下の２つの可能性があるのではないかと考えました。

1. We cannot have the events other than they are written on this basis.
または
We cannot have history other than they are written on this basis.
これと同義ととらえる。

2. We cannot have the events as they are.と同義とする。

1だとすると、except thatと同義です。
2だとすると、other than they are = as they areです。
私は、１だと考えました。
辞書を見ても２の意味が見当たらないからです。
ただし、これについては、さらに検討の余地がありそうですが、
これ以上時間を割きたくないので、ここまでといたします。
