2)partonは後援者という意味だったと思うのですがここではeliteのことですか？

人生はこういうふうに生きるべきだった。
これを変形して
the way life was to be lived
人生はこういうふうに生きるべきだったという、その生き方（名詞節）

政治的社会的に力を持ったeliteが芸術家のpatronになる。
ここでは、eliteとpatronは同じ人です。

才能がありすぎて既存の枠にはまらない芸術家は、保守本流のエリートの好みには合わなくて、エリートの中でも異端児的な人で、ちょっと変わった趣味の人の庇護を受けることがある。
のような趣旨。
