But of course, people who seek assurance in groups are not the powerful beings they fancy themselves to be. They are whistling in the dark because they are scared and unsure of themselves. The truly strong person is the one who dares to walk alone; the one who, although frightened, faces the mob, or turns his or her back on it with determination. The truly powerful person is the nervous philosopher, the frightened makes a dangerous discovery. To utter thinker: the one who - like Galileo -unpopular views when surrounded by an angry crowd is a lonely and alarming activity - nearly all the great spiritual heroes of humanity knew what it was to be terrified -but it demands genuine power, not play-acting.

よって、the frightened は「怖れている人」(the＋形容詞＝形容詞な人)　これはThe truly strong person との対比ですね。
 nearly all the great spiritual heroes of humanity knew what it was to be terrified の部分の主語はhumanityなので、
「ほとんどの崇高な偉人の人間性は怖れるということがどういうことなのかわきまえていた」という感じになるのではないでしょうか。
