下記の文を、新聞紙上で見かけたのですが、「Her appearance softer than in recent days」　Her appearance と softer　の間に is などの動詞が必要な気がするのですが、必要ないのでしょうか？
お解りの方がおられましたら、よろしくお願いいたします。

Her appearance softer than in recent days, with her hair no longer bundled up, Ms Palin praised Senator McCain as honest and courageous.

いろいろな解釈が可能かもしれませんが、独立分詞構文でbeingが省略された形と解釈するのが分かりやすいのではないかと思います。

Her appearance (being) softer than in recent days,
＝ While her appearance was softer than in recent days,
ということです。

「動詞の省略」というテーマです。

２つの場合があります：
(1) 同じ動詞を繰り返す場合、省略する。
Charlotte is young and her appearance soft and lustrous.

(2) With の省略：
He said, with his voice weak.
He said, his voice weak.

今の場合は
With her appearance softer than in recent days, with her hair no longer bundled up, Ms Palin praised Senator McCain as honest and courageous.
の with が省略されたと考えればよいと思われます。後の方の with も省略出来る気もしますが。
