英語の文章、特に、"a"と"the"について

次のような文章を英語にしたのですが、これでよいでしょうか?
どなたか、アドバイスいただけませんか?
特に、"a"と"the"の使い方(特に"AIZU" is the name of the area which lay in Fukushima Prefecture の、、"a"と"the"の使い方)がよく分からないのですが。

・「会津」は、日本の江戸時代に、今の福島県及びその周辺に位置する領域の名称だった。
現代の日本では、「会津」という地名は存在していない。

・During Edo period (1603-1868), "AIZU" is the name of the area which lay in Fukushima Prefecture and periphery thereof in Japan.
Today, "AIZU" is not a name of any geographic places in Japan.

会津の土地についての記述が既出であれば、the name of the areaとしても問題ないです。

私なら

“Aizu” is the name of an area which lies in present Fukushma prefecture and its periphery in the Edo period of Japan.
この文の前にこの場所についての記述が既出で、『福島県の（その）場所の名前は』というのでなければ the area ではなくan areaのほうが良いと思います。layは過去形なので現在形が良いと思います。

現代の日本では、「会津」という地名は存在していない。
There’s no place which is called “Aizu”now in Japan.
個人的には、このほうがすっきりするかと思いますが、貴方の文でも何ら問題ありません。

一つだけ・・・
"Aizu"も初めて出てくる言葉なのですが、
「“Aizu” is the name of an area which lies in ・・・」
というように「the name」でよいでしょうか(「a name」でしょうか)?

... the name を、a name にすると少しおかしい感じがします。この場合、その地域の呼び名が幾つもあるような意味合いになるかと思います。
... the area は、そのままでも、an area にしても、どちらでも良いと思います。微妙なところですが、the の方がやや堅い文になり、an を使うと、軽い感じになります。
... 江戸時代のことですから、is を過去形 was にします。

参考に、別の表現を書いておきます。

「会津」は、日本の江戸時代に、今の福島県及びその周辺に位置する領域の名称だった。
In the Edo era, current Fukushima prefecture and its neighborhood were called "Aizu".

現代の日本では、「会津」という地名は存在していない。
Today, we do not use the name "Aizu" officially in Japan.

the Edo Period →theが要ります
the periphery thereofと言えなくもありませんが、thereofは絶滅危惧種に指定したいような英語です。

私なりに「江戸時代において」を文章の真ん中に入れた方がいいかな、と思いまして、次のようにしてみましたが、どうでしょうか?
