の訳を教えてください。

それと、その続きでHe went back down with Nancy and they came back with Nancy's pallet.

のpalletはどういう意味ですか？調べてもいまいちよくわかりません。

You mean Nancy?

Nope.
Nancy stared at "I"(=the speaker) and Caddy with her(=Nancy's) back against the wall".
It is equivalent to the sentence ; "Nancy looked at them with Nancy's back against the wall."

Well, you mean, there is a landing 1/2 way up and she could be against that wall--EXCELLENT! and I think you could also imagine L-shape like designs(my point is; it depends on the design of the staircase).

pallet means kind of temporary beds or just a cloth bag filled with straw. But that meaning is old fashioned.

So, you admitted your translation was wrong. Very good and judging from your writing, your English is very good. Probably your answer on #1 was a one-off silly mistake.

I SAID「ただ他の文脈に照らして 「目」という解釈がでてくる余地はもちろんあるでしょうね。」(in #3).
Given the sentences you posted, your interpretation (このTheyは「彼ら」ではありません。　代名詞で「目」を指しています。) makes more sense than mine in #1. And " a big cat against the wall" implies " Nancy stared at "I"(=the speaker) and Caddy with her back against the wall". Duh!

でもNo2さんは日本人だよね？　ネイティブとして一言言わせてもらうと この文脈だけで they を「目」と読むひとはいないと思いますよ(笑)。
