これらの文章を訳して欲しいです。
特に、But the way to~の文がさっぱり分かりません。lain throughというのは、～を通して横たわったと訳しますか??

(1)At present,in the most civilized countries,freedom of speech is taken as a matter of course and seems a perfectly simple thing.But the way to its attainment has lain through lakes of blood.

(2)The test of a great book is whether we want to read it only once or more than once.Any really great book we want to read the second time even more than we wanted to read it we find new meanings and new beauties in it.

(3)And after all the weather was ideal.They could not have had a more perfect day for a garden-party if they had ordered it.Windless,warm,the sky without a cloud.

(4)Human life consists of a succession of a small events,each of which is comparatively unimportant,and yet the happiness of all man depend upon the manner in which these small events are dealt with.

現在、最も高度な文明を有する国々において言論の自由は当然のこととみなされ、最も単純明快なことのように思われている。しかしこの自由に到達する途上においていくつもの血の海をくぐりぬけてくる必要があった。

（1）現在最も文明の進んだ国々では、言論の自由は当然のことと受け止められているし、至極簡単なことだと思われている。

しかし言論の自由の達成に至る道は血の湖を通っていると言えるほどの苦労があったのである。
（２）偉大な本の試金石とは私たちがその本を一度だけ読みたいと思うか一度ならず読みたいと思うかである。私たちが読みたいと思ったより一層再度読みたいと思う本当に偉大な本はどれでも、私たちはその中に新たな意味や新たな美を見出すものである。
（３）そして結局天気は理想的であった。彼らが注文してあったとしても、ガーデンパーティーにそれほど申し分のない日は無かったことだろう。風もなく、温かで、空には雲ひとつなかった。
（４）人生は連続する些細な出来事で成り立っている。その一つ一つは比較的重要ではないが、とは言え全ての人の幸福はこの様な些細な出来事がどのように処理されるかにかかっているのである。

（1）で原文がもしin most civillized countriesとなっていたら「ほとんどの文明国」です。
（２）も Any really great book...の文がやや文法的に足りないところがあるように思うのですが。
（４）the manner in which = how
なお　succeed in ...に成功する
　　　（名）success （形）successful
succeed to ...を継ぐ
　　　（名）succession （形）successive

いかがでしょうか。いずれも入試でこれまでにも何度も出題されてきた文章だと思います。頻度別の長文問題集等を調べれば同じ文が見つかると思います。

あろうことに、当日の天気は理想通り。園遊会向けに、これ程相応しい日和など、望むべくもないだろう。穏やかで、暖かく、雲一つ無い空など。
