The Economist (October 18th, 2014)からの英文です。宇宙生物学に関する記事で、銀河の中のある地域は生物を育みにくいという文章で、分からない所があります。

some regions of the galaxy are less friendly to life than others. Moreover, the friendly areas may have been smaller in the past than they are now. If that is true, then it may be the case that complex life on Earth is just about as ancient as it is possible for complex life to be.

最後のセンテンスの、If that is true, ... 以下が良く分かりません。どういう意味でしょうか？

　銀河系のどこに位置するかによって、生命を育む条件に適不適がある。また、適した位置にあるとしても、過去には現在よりも限定的な範囲にとどまっていたかもしれない。そうだとすると、地上に複雑な形態の生命体が存在するということは、地球はそのような生命体を育ませるに足る古さを有しているのだといえるかもしれない。


なるほど、少し分かりにくいかもしれないですね。just about as ancient as ... は、「まさに・・・であるほどに、それほどに古い」 のような感じです。as it is possible for complex life to be の it は the Earth のこと。だから 「地球が複雑な生命を存在させる (to be) ことが可能であるほどに (possible for ...)」 という意味になってます。

地球に複雑な構造の生命が存在するのは、単純な生命体がそこまで発達するだけの十分な時間を経ているからだ、それほどに古い惑星なのだ、ということを述べているのでしょう。

頂いた回答を元に、自分なりにまた考え、以下のように文章を分析して見ました。

:文章を簡略化して、If that is true以下を2文に分解すると、
Complex life on earth is as ancient as X. 地球上の複雑な生命体は、Xと同じくらい古い。
X = It is possible for complex life to be. 複雑な生命がすることが可能である。

:再び2文を合成して、
地球上の複雑な生命体は、それ(複雑な生命体)が存在することが可能な(程度)ほど古い。

ところで、

とのことなのですが、僭越ながら、このitは仮主語ではないでしょうか？ ウィズダム２英和・和英辞典に、以下のような文章が載っていました。
It is not possible for him to see her.
✖️He is not possible to see her. としない。
これから考えると、「be動詞+possible for ～」 のbe動詞の前には、仮主語しか置けないと思いました。
