英文の意味の取り方を教えてください

最初に出てくる"The great man is too often all of a piece."について質問があります。

偉大な人間はあまりにしばしば断片のすべてである・・・・・？

＊ここはどうやって意味をとればよいのでしょうか？
断片を統合したような人物、という感じですか？

＊また、too oftenのところがわからないのですが、
The great man is all of a piece.にするのとどういうニュアンスの違いがあるのでしょうか？

「名だたる人というのは一種類の部品だけで作られているので辟易してしまう。それに引き換え庶民というのは出鱈目の部品の詰め合わせなのだ。彼は無尽蔵である。彼の蔵にしまわれている吃驚（びっくり）は尽きることが無いのだ。だから熱帯の無人島で一か月過ごすとしたら総理大臣じゃなくて普通の獣医の方を私としては選びたいと思う。」

★The Summing Up by W. S Maugham：懐かしいですね。恥ずかしながら、「モーム」を「モーガン」と高校卒業するまで読んでいました。当時の英文解釈の参考書には必ず載っていましたね。「Summing Up」には二つの意味があって、彼は皮肉的に使ったということを後で知りました。いずれにしても彼の英文は簡潔で当時の英文学者には人気があったようです。

は「偉い人は、得てして、同じような部分でその人全体が出来上がっている」

ということで、「色々矛盾した部分から成り立っているのは、（偉くない）普通の人だ。（部分の食い違いに関する限り）限りが無い。

次に何が出て来るかまったく予想のつかない驚きは、尽きることを知らない。

私に言わせれば、一か月、無人の孤島で一緒に過ごすとなれば、総理大臣より、獣医の方がよっぽどいいと思う。」

という後文に、自然に続くように思います。

Birds of a feather flocks together. 同じfeather（羽）の鳥は一緒に群をなす。
でお馴染の、of a + 名詞の形です。このaは、the sameに近い意味を持ちます。
そこで、
The great man is all of the same piece.
としてみると少し分かりやすいですね。
次にちょっと文法的にはあやうい方法で確認します。allを取り去ります。
The great man is of the same piece.
これだと、偉大な人物は、おなじピースからなっている、できているーーという意味になります。
ここにallを加えれば、
偉大な人物は、すべて、同じピースからできているーーということになります。
その同じピースとは、
a bundle of contradictory elementsだというのです。
矛盾した要素を束ねたものだというのです。
ですから、偉大な人物というのは、矛盾した要素を束ねた小者という、同じピースからできているーーという意味になります。

偉大な人間は、全部が（たった）一つの部品で（出来上がって）いることが多すぎる。

で、普通のつまらない人間の方が、色々な、相互に矛盾する要素を含んでいて、おもしろい…という話につながっていきます。

too oftenがあることで
(1)そういうことが多いが、いつも必ずそうだとは限らない
(2)そうでないことは、残念なくらい少ない
というニュアンスが加わります。
