Every culture has its own polite fictions. Whenever we want to be polite, we must act out certain fictions, regardless of the facts. For example, when you meet someone, you may or may not like him, but either way, you must politely pretend to like him. In such a case, Americans and Japanese share the same polite fiction, "you and I like each other."
But in many cases, Americans and Japanese act according to very different polite fictions. They newly married young man was acting according to the Japanese polite fiction, "my wife is not good," while I was reacting according to the American polite fiction, "my wife wonderful."
In America, politeness demands that even if you are thinking of divorcing your wife, until you are ready to announce it publicly, you must imply, or at least not deny, that you think she's wonderful.

全ての文化は礼儀正しくする。

礼儀正しくするには当然その行動をする。例えば誰かに会った時たとえ好きでも嫌いでもその人に礼儀正しくする。このような場合にはアメリカ人と日本人は共同に礼儀正しくする。でもほとんどの場合はアメリカ人と日本人は違う礼儀正しさを表現する。例えば新婚に日本の礼儀なら”妻はあまり良くない”と言う。だがアメリカの場合は”妻は素晴らしい”と言う。
アメリカでは妻と離婚する時に礼儀正しさの必要せいがある。離婚のことを表向きにするまで妻のことを素晴らしいとほのめかす、最低でも否定しないこと。
