英作文の添削

英作文の練習をしています。
自分では添削できないので、添削していただけないでしょうか。
なぜ、そう添削したのかなど、軽く書いてもらえると嬉しいです。

1 好きなことがたくさんあればあるほど、楽しみが多い。これといって好きなことがない人は、どんなにか手持ち無沙汰でつまらないことだろう。→The many people have favorite things,the much they get fun.People don't particularly have favorite things are how free and bored they are.

2 外国人学生が日本にきて最も驚くのは、まだまだ使えるものがあまりにもたくさんごみとして捨てられていることだ。→Foreign students in Japan is the most surprised that many not broken things are threw away too much.

3 外国語の上達の第一は、短期間に集中して、その言語をできるだけたくさん読み、話し、聞き、書くことだ。→The best way to progress with foreign languages is reading,speaking,listening,and writing intensively as much as possible.

4 アメリカ合衆国は日本の２５倍の広さがあり、ニューヨークとサンフランシスコは４０００キロも離れている。→America is 25 times as large as Japan,and New York is 4000 km away from San Francisco.

5 これまで推理小説はたくさん読んだけど、こんなに面白い作品は初めてだ。→I have ever read many detective stories,and this is the most interesting story I have ever read.　また,and以下をbut,I have never read such like this.とも書いてみました。

以下、回答者が10人いれば英訳10通りが出てくると思いますが、なるべく原訳にある単語を生かすつもりで書いてみました。

参考にして頂き、不明点をご質問下さい。

1 好きなことがたくさんあればあるほど、楽しみが多い。これといって好きなことがない人は、どんなにか手持ち無沙汰でつまらないことだろう。
→The many people have favorite things,the much they get fun.People don't particularly have favorite things are how free and bored they are.
>>The more favorite things (, such as hobbies,) you have, the more joy they will bring to you. Those who are without any particular hobbies have nothing to do and must be bored.
、、、典型的な「the more 構文」ですよね。好きなこと＝hobbiesと言っても差し支えないと思います。それはお好みで。もちろんpeopleでも間違えではありませんが、不特定多数の人を指す時には those whoがよく使われますよね。

2 外国人学生が日本にきて最も驚くのは、まだまだ使えるものがあまりにもたくさんごみとして捨てられていることだ。
→Foreign students in Japan is the most surprised that many not broken things are threw away too much.
>>The most surprising fact for foreign students who come to Japan is to learn (see) things still usable are thrown away (discarded) as trashes excessively.
、、、usable を使ってやるとスッキリすると思いますよ。learn には学習するという意味の他に、「見て、聞いて知る」という意味があります。

→The best way to progress with foreign languages is reading, speaking, listening, and writing intensively as much as possible.

4 アメリカ合衆国は日本の２５倍の広さがあり、ニューヨークとサンフランシスコは４０００キロも離れている。
→America is 25 times as large as Japan,and New York is 4000 km away from San Francisco.
>>The United States of America is twenty-five times as large as Japan in area, and New York is as far as 4000km away from San Francisco.
、、、in area は「面積（の比較で）」という意味です。as far as と入れることで「何と4000kmも！」という感嘆のニュアンスが入ります。

5 これまで推理小説はたくさん読んだけど、こんなに面白い作品は初めてだ。
→I have ever read many detective stories,and this is the most interesting story I have ever read.　また,and以下をbut,I have never read such like this.とも書いてみました。
>>I have read many detective stories (novels), but I have never encountered (read) more interesting one than this.
、、、この場合は andより but～never とした方が「比較できないほど面白い」というニュアンスが出て良いかなと思います。and を使うなら、and this one is the most interesting by far（ダントツで）.でしょうか。

The more things you like, the more fun you get. How bored are those who do not have something they like to do!

the 比較級は名詞を伴うときは名詞ごと前に持ってきます。
感嘆文は動詞 are は文末にあるのが本来ですが主語が長くバランスが悪いときは倒置できます。
英作文では don't などの短縮形は使わない。
something は「好んでする『何か』」という意味であえて anything ではなく something にしています。

The most surprising thing to foreign students in Japan is that too many things are thrown away which are still usable.

関係節が長いので away の後ろに回しました。

The best way to improve your skill in a foreign language is to intensively read, speak, listen to and write the language as much as possible in a short period.

improve 上達させる
skill in ～の能力
副詞句が多いので intensively は分離不定詞にしました（あまり好まない人もいます）。

４はだいたい良いですが次のようにも
The United States is twenty-five times as large as Japan, and New York City is 4,000 km away from San Francisco.

I have read a lot of detective stories but I have never read such an exciting one as this.

肯定文で、「今までに～した」というときに「現在完了＋ ever」は使いません。
「面白い」は interesting の他に exciting（読んでわくわくする）も可能でしょう。
後半を肯定文にするときは and でつないだ方がいいようです。逆接という感じがしない。
～ and this is the most exciting story I have ever read.

Favorite　Thingsは意味は伝わりますが、不自然です。Hobbyでよいのでは。The..., the ...の文型を使おうとされているのだと思いますが、それにこだわる必要はないかと。The …, the…の文型は学校では習うのですが、実際あまり使いません。簡潔にYou can enjoy your life if you have more hobbies. 辺りのほうがすっきりします。The…., theをあえて使いたいのなら、The more hobbies you have, the more enjoyable your life will be.とか。Youの代わりにOneを使うことも出来ますが。２文目ですが、今訳されているのに一番近いものだと、People who don’t particularly have favorite things must (have so much free time and) be board.　Peopleの 後にはWhoがいりますし、～ことだろうはMust一言で十分意味が出ると思います。

2 外国人学生が日本にきて最も驚くのは、まだまだ使えるものがあまりにもたくさんごみとして捨てられていることだ。→Foreign students in Japan is the most surprised that many not broken things are threw away too much.　

Foreign studentsという言葉はネイティブの人にはあまりなじみがないようです。Exchange studentsという言葉を使う方の方が多いです。Many not broke thingsの正しい語順はMany things not broken。捨てられているはAre thrown away。最後のToo much余計ですね。始めにManyと言っているのだから。

日本語で上達というとProgressといいたくなく気持ちわかりますが、ここはLearnでよいと思います。Intensivelyは良い単語ですね。

AmericaというよりThe United Statesのほうが良いです。Americaというと国名というよりアメリカ大陸地域といった感じがします。As large asではなくLarger than。コンマとAndでつなげるより２つの文に分けてしまったほうがすっきりします。

5 これまで推理小説はたくさん読んだけど、こんなに面白い作品は初めてだ。→I have ever read many detective stories,and this is the most interesting story I have ever read.　また,and以下をbut,I have never read such like this.とも書いてみました。

I have ever readのEverは余計です。最後のI ever readは余計です。もう最初にいくつも読んだといっていますから。
