Another influential teacher was the German physiologist Ernst von Brucke (1819-1892), who, like his close friend Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894), professor of physics at Berlin, was determined to explain biological phenomena in terms of chemistry and mechanics. From 1876 to 1882, Freud spent much time working in Brucke’s physiological institute, where a team of biologists was investigation the fine anatomical structure of nerves with a view to discovering how they triggered off both physiological and mental phenomena.

もう1人影響を受けた先生はドイツ人生理学者、エルンスト・フォン・ブリユッケ（1821年～1894年）で、彼の親友でベルリンの物理学教授、ヘルマン・フォン・ヘルムホルツ（182年～1894年）同様、化学と力学の観点からの生物学的現象の説明を決定付けた人でした。

1876年から1882年にかけて、フロイトは多くの時間をブリュッケの生理学研究所で働くことに費やしました。そこでは生物学者によるチームにより、どうしたら生物学的精神的現象双方が誘発するのかを発見する為に、顕微鏡を用いて神経の微細な解剖学的構造が研究されていました。
