道をはずれたまま戻れなくなる

登山の話で「道をはずれたまま戻れなくなる」
というのを英語で言う時、どういうのがいいでしょうか?

He will not return going too much off the beaten track.

訂正や他の言い方ありましたらお願いいたします。

He strayed away from the path, and could not return.

He lost the route, and did not return.

など、ふたつの文をandでつなげるのが、楽だと思います。
track, path,route　あたりは、どれでも使えると思います。
