This is not a political issue. This is a moral issue, one that affects the survival of human civilization. It is not a question of left versus right; it is a question of right versus wrong. Put simply, it is wrong to destroy the habitability of our planet and ruin the prospects of every generation that follows ours.

On September 21, 1987, President Ronald Reagan said,"In our obsession with antagonisms of the moment, we often forget how much unites all the members of humanity. Perhaps we need some outside, universal threat to recognize this common bond. I occasionally think how quickly our differences would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world."

@ "Put simply"は"Being put simply"という分詞構文の"Being"の省略。普通は"To put it simply"とします。先の分詞構文の主語は"To put it simply"の"it"で省略されています。

さほど英語に詳しい者ではありませんが・・・．

大体，そういうご理解で宜しいと思います．ここでいう，universal threatとは「人類共通の脅威」を表しているのでしょう．universalには「全人類共通の」の意味合いもあります．


＞In our obsession with antagonisms of the moment，an alien threat from outside this worldというのはそれぞれどういうものですか？

obsessionは「こだわり，執着」などの意があります．また，of the momentはイディオムで「現在の」の意を表します．ですから，

　　　　　In our obsession with antagonisms of the moment「現在の敵対関係のこだわりの中で」

といった感じでしょうか．


また，alienは「異質な，地球外の」などの意があります．また，

from outside A「Aの外部から」

です．さらにworldにもいくつかの意味がありますが，ここでのthis worldは「地球」を指しているのでしょう．ですから，

　　　　　from outside this world「地球の外から」

です．だから，

　　　　　an alien threat from outside this world「地球の外からの異質な脅威」

ぐらいで宜しいのではないでしょうか．
